O B J E C T I V E S :

The purpose of this module is to provide you with information relating to the emergency medical care technique of defibrillation. This technique is used during situations involving cardiopulmonary arrest and consists in providing electric shocks to the heart in an effort to reestablish a normal cardiac rhythm (heartbeat). Over the course of this module, you will discover the following concepts: The heart, the circulatory system and circulatory disorders. Heart electrical activity and normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms. AED devices (their operation and use). Response protocols for incidents involving cardiopulmonary arrest (the ABCD, AED techniques and protocols). AED cleaning and maintenance. Skills required to become an AED-qualified responder. Once this knowledge regarding defibrillation and the AED has been acquired, you will then need to complete the practical training component. The latter will enable you to apply your knowledge and techniques in a concrete, hands-on training environment.
